Romanian Man Arrested on Felony Larceny Charge for Stealing from Downtown Rockingham Bank

Nicolae Muntean

ROCKINGHAM – A Romanian native accused of felony larceny at Capital Bank in downtown Rockingham has been captured.

The suspect, Nicolae Muntean, entered the bank between 11:00 and 11:45 this past Monday morning. His initial intention appeared that he wanted to exchange currency to smaller denominations. While the currency was being distributed, the suspect took the money from the counter and bolted for the exit without presenting a weapon or threatening the bank teller.

The teller then made an attempt to stop Muntean by yelling at him; nonetheless, he left in a grey passenger van and began heading in an unknown direction.  The amount of currency stolen was over $1,000.

Muntean was apprehended within two hours in Bennettsville, South Carolina by the Bennettsville Police Department. He was captured inside of a Bennettsville bank attempting to exchange currency again. He was transported back to the Richmond County jail where he was given a $25,000 secured bond.

Muntean is originally from Romania and claims to be in the United States to seek refuge. The Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation were notified of the incident.

The capture proved to be a joint effort of the Rockingham Police, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bennettsville Police Department of South Carolina.
