SBI investigating ‘suspicious item’ at Hamlet PD

HAMLET — The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist with an incident a local police station.

According to Chief Dennis Brown, someone brought a “suspicious item” into the Hamlet Police Department around 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Around 8:30 p.m., the department was still taped off and Champlain Street was blocked with patrol cars at the intersection of Main Street and between the police and fire departments.

Brown said there is no hazard or danger to the community.

The RO will have more information as it becomes available.

Despite the incident, City Manager Matt Christian said the City Council meeting went on as scheduled, with the introduction of Amanda Kempen as new director of the Hamlet Senior Center.
