Stanly, Montgomery counties surpass Richmond in COVID-19 cases

ROCKINGHAM — Two neighboring counties, which had lagged behind Richmond in the total number of cases, have seen sharp rises in new coronavirus cases within the past week.

Nearby Stanly County has spiked within the past two weeks, surpassing Richmond with 277, as has Montgomery with 252.

The number of COVID-19 recoveries and new cases in Richmond County both continue to rise, keeping the number of active cases bobbing up and down.

The Richmond County Health Department reported Monday that there were 62 active cases — nine more than on June 17 — with three hospitalized and 59 under home isolation.

Since then, the number of recoveries has risen from one 161 to 167.

Also since then, there have been 13 new cases of the coronavirus to come back positive. The health department reported five new cases on both June 19 and 22; two new cases on June 20; and one new case June 19.

The county’s total is now at 234.

Statewide, new case numbers are on the second downward trend within the past week, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

The number of daily lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 was cut in half from 1,443 on June 14 to 751 on June 16, the lowest since June 9.

However, the numbers began to rise again, peaking at 1,652 on June 19 — the second-highest one-day total since the state began monitoring.

The daily numbers continued to fall, dropping to 804 on Monday.

South Carolina set a new record for the number of daily cases on Saturday with 1,157.

The number of COVID-19-related hospitalizations in North Carolina has remained between 700 and 900 since June 8, topping out at 883 on June 20.

There have now been a total of 53,605 cases in the state since March. DHHS estimates that 36,921 have recovered. Out of those 1,223 deaths have been attributed to the coronavirus, including five in Richmond County.

One Richmond County woman was released on Friday after being hospitalized for since April, including spending three weeks on a ventilator.

Several cases of high school students in Ohio and West Virginia are being attributed to a trip to Myrtle Beach earlier in the month.
