Sullivan, McInnis honored by Lumber River Council of Governments

PEMBROKE — Two Richmond County leaders were regionally recognized Thursday during the Lumber River Council of Governments’ annual meeting.

Denise Sullivan, mayor pro tem for Rockingham, was honored with the Leon Mayor Local Leadership Award.

The award is named for a former Lumberton city councilman and longtime LRCOG board member who passed away while serving on the Board of Directors.

The description for the award says Mayor was “a fierce advocate for his community of West Lumberton, and strived to improve the lives of his constituents on a daily basis,” and is given to a member dedicated to improving quality of life.

Sullivan is described as “the epitome of a thoughtful and dedicated leader … a champion for economic revitalization and quality of life development. She is described as an ‘out of the box thinker’ who gets things done.”

Having served on the Rockingham City Council since being appointed in 2013, Sullivan “has been a vocal proponent of downtown revitalization efforts,” reads a press release.

Although not mentioned in the press release, Sullivan has also been a staunch supporter of the Plaza Jam summer concert series as well as Richmond Community Theatre.

Dr. Dale McInnis, soon-to-be retired president of Richmond Community College, was honored as the Dr. Stanley Richardson Award for Workforce Development Board Member of the Year.

That award’s namesake was “a devoted board member and a longtime educator from Bladen County … an avid advocate for youth and education during his tenure.”

McInnis has served on the Lumber River Workforce Development Board for 13 years, not long after taking the top job at RichmondCC, serving as chairman of the Evaluation Committee.

“He has been a champion for workforce development during his tenure on the Lumber River Workforce Development Board as an advocate for quality training and employment services for job seekers and employers,” reads a description of McInnis.

McInnis is stepping down from his current role on Oct. 31, and will take over as head of the O’Neal School in Moore County.

Another Richmond County leader, Dobbins Heights Councilwoman Angeline David, presided over the meeting.

Other counties in the LRCOG are Bladen, Scotland, Robeson and Hoke.
