ROCKINGHAM — Linemen are working around the Carolinas to restore power to more than 25,000 customers following strong storms on Tuesday.

As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, Duke Energy was reporting that 27,182 of its customers were without power. More than 24,000 of those are in North Carolina.

Only four of Duke’s customers in Richmond County had no power by that time. However, both Moore and Robeson counties had more than 1,000 without power. Mecklenburg and Durham counties had the highest numbers of customers without power.

Pee Dee Electric still had around 1,500 total customers without power (only 33 in Richmond) with the majority being in Anson County.

The electric cooperative said in an update at 11:30 a.m. that it hoped to have power restored to around 1,300 customers by 2 p.m.

“Our lineworkers are working very hard …to restore power to everyone as quickly and safely as possible,” PDE said in the social media post. “…all of our crews and a few other crews from outside of our area are out working to restore power.”

The RO is currently working to find out about local damage from the storm.
