HAMLET — Jim Quick and Coastline will be bringing their own genre of music known as “Swamp Soul” to the Cole Auditorium for the annual spring Gala on Saturday, April 13, from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

The Gala, a fundraiser for student scholarships, is put on by the Richmond Community College Foundation.

“We are excited to have Jim Quick and Coastline providing the entertainment this year at the Gala,” said Dr. Hal Shuler, associate vice president for development at the college. “Their talent is well known up and down the East Coast, and we know they will bring a great, upbeat vibe to the Gala. We want people to come have a good time for a good cause.”

Over 25 years in the making, Jim Quick and Coastline, like their namesake — the Atlantic Coastline Railroad — have been traveling the “tracks” of the Southeast and connecting with the hearts of loyal “Coastline Crazies.” They pull from the threads of soul, blues, R&B and Americana to weave together a genre they call “Swamp Soul.”

“I want my music to be a bridge for many genres, a place where traditional and contemporary music can unite,” said frontman Quick. “I do love the pure emotion and simple-yet-deep concepts of root music, but I’m a Southern boy and it all hits home. The lyrics and heart of the music, from the melodies to the chord progressions, it all seems to strike an ancestral nerve with me.”

The band includes five musicians whose talents have landed them numerous awards in the industry, including winning Entertainer of the Year 18 times at the Carolina Music Awards.

“The band currently maintains an average of 250 tour dates per year, so it is a privilege to have a band of this caliber coming to our Gala,” Shuler said.

Admission is $50 per person with corporate sponsorships beginning at $1,000. All proceeds go the RichmondCC Working Student Scholarship.

The Working Student Scholarship helps students who are working while in college and do not qualify for federal financial assistance. Since its inception in 2013, the scholarship has helped more than 600 students make ends meet while working and going to college.

Call Shuler at 910-410-1807 or email whshuler@richmondcc.edu for tickets or sponsorships.
