TOP STORY: Big Lots Set to Close Permanently January 13, 2018

Big Lots will close permanently on January 13, 2018.

ROCKINGHAM — Big Lots, located on Broad Avenue in Rockingham, will permanently close on Jan. 13, 2018.

The Big Lots Corporate Office in Columbus, Ohio, confirmed the closing Monday evening after a phone conversation with the Richmond Observer newsroom.

The company is currently undergoing over 1,400 remodels throughout the United States, but a Big Lots company representative confirmed that the Rockingham location will not be closing for a remodel like its counterparts, and will instead be closing for good. The company also has no intention to locate another store in Richmond County despite its current nationwide push to remodel existing stores, as well as open brand new locations.

“The Rockingham location will close on January 13, but we invite the community to still shop at Big Lots in the nearby Laurinburg and Aberdeen locations,” said the Big Lots corporate office representative.

When asked for a reason why the store will be closing, the corporate office representative and local store management representative, who was also reached out to, declined to comment.

Despite the store closing, the local economy in Richmond County continues to grow with new businesses and industrial announcements. Enviva, the wood pellet production company which just broke ground in Richmond County last month, will bring nearly 90 full-time jobs to the county with above-average salaries. In addition, new businesses continue to sprout up throughout the county, including Rockingham, Hamlet, and Ellerbe, who have all witnessed new businesses in their downtowns launch this calendar year.

The Richmond Observer will continue to monitor the story as details emerge.
