ROCKINGHAM – Independently owned and operated, Edwards IGA has a long history of serving their customers with quality food and genuine next door neighbor service.

The store opened its doors in 1981 under the ownership of Russell Edwards.  Edwards, now 85, still owns the store and works there daily putting in a 40-hour week.  The store is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Two things to note, though: they are not open on Sundays and you won’t find any beer or wine in their store.

According to assistant manager Jonathan Rushing, a 10-year employee and grandson of Edwards,  “The Lord has blessed us.”

About two years ago, the Edwards group decided to start weekly drawings for  $50 grocery gift certificates.

“Times are tough on families,” Rushing said. “They are having a hard time with bills and the whole economic situation.  We are trying to give back to the community.”

The drawing is held every Saturday and broadcast on Edwards IGA Facebook site. Those selected do not have to be present to win.

The store has a total of 18 employees and they all take pride in delivering quality, value and great service in all they do.

“The main thing we want to do is from the time a customer walks in the door until after they get home, we want them to be satisfied,” Rushing noted.

The meat department is a major focal point of the store.

“When they (customers) get home and take their steaks out of the package, we want them to look just as good on the bottom as they do on the top,” explained Rushing.

The store, according to Rushing, is one of very few in this area that still cuts their meat in-house.

Rushing invites everyone in Richmond County to stop by, check out their store and enter the $50 giveaway drawing.  He says customers will be greeted warmly when they enter and will likely feel the small-town difference immediately.

“Our first purpose is to honor God and serve Him,” Rushing concluded. And from the looks of their business model, it would appear those at Edward’s IGA are trying hard to do just that.
