Tropical Storm Michael Floods Roads, Causes Power Outages in Richmond County

Accuweather

ROCKINGHAM — Tropical Storm Michael continues to dump rain in North Carolina and Virginia as it continues northward.

The weakened system made its way through Richmond County with heavy to moderate showers and gusty winds in the late morning hours into the afternoon.

Several roads — including Yates Hill Road, Airport Road and Ann Street — were reported to have flooded areas, according to a list set up by Jimmy Herring on the group Facebook page What’s Up Richmond County.

Herring started a similar list during Hurricane Florence to compensate for the lack of information from government officials.

The storm also caused more than 1,200 residents to lose power. At 4 p.m., almost half of the outages were between Ellerbe and Norman and there was a large section of outages west of U.S. 220 between Harrington Road and the U.S. 74 Bypass, as well as about 60 in the Hylan Avenue area of Hamlet.

Michael made landfall early Wednesday afternoon as a strong Category 4 hurricane — just 2 mph shy of being a Category 5.

Video of rows of coastal homes damaged or completely gone highlight the destruction in the Florida Panhandle.

Richmond County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:30 p.m. Thursday and remains under a tropical storm warning.
