APEX, N.C. – It was a successful weekend for Richmond County middle school cheerleaders, as two different squads placed in the North Carolina Cheerleading Coaches Association (NCCCA) 2018 State Championship.
Ellerbe and Rockingham middle schools made the trip to Apex Friendship High School and competed in the middle and junior high school non-tumbling bracket. The Lady Rockets, who opened the day’s competition at 10 a.m., went on to place first out of six non-tumble schools.
The Lady Wildcats, who had never competed or placed in the state championship prior to Saturday, finished the day by placing in fourth.
For Ellerbe head coach Jordyn Pillar, and Rockingham head coach Ashley Lupfer, their placements are worth a lot more than competing against one another.
“We, as their coaches, are beyond proud of their hard work and dedication and could not more excited for their accomplishments this weekend,” Lupfer and Pillar wrote in a joint statement. “It was wonderful to have so many families and athletes from Richmond County supporting each other at the event. “

Rockingham: Saniah Durham, Molly Erwin, Maggie Gillespie, Cayden Hood, Destiny Isler, MaKailah Jackson, Savannah Jordan, Cheyenne Leviner, Claire Maultsby, Kirsten McDonald, Leah McLeod, Jenna McRae, Zoie Mcswain, Ashley Murphy, Kaley Scholl, Lilly Summerlin, Karter Walker, Maylyn Wallace, Laila Watkins and Abby Williams.
