ROCKINGHAM — The United Way of Richmond County will be joined next week by volunteers to complete 10 projects as it kicks off its campaign with the annual “Day of Caring.”
The event will begin around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Cole Auditorium, where 17 of the United Way’s partnering agencies will share their program of work with the community, according to a press release issued Tuesday.
“It’s our 10th year of giving back to our community with our ‘Day of Caring’ and our United Way’s 53rd annual campaign kickoff,” said Executive Director Michelle Parrish.
This year, volunteers will be assisting with projects at Samaritan Colony, Sandhills Children’s Center, the Exceptional Children’s Department of Monroe Avenue Elementary, the East Rockingham and Ellerbe Senior Centers, BackPack Pals, and Our Daily Bread.
They will also be helping the American Red Cross install smoke detectors and assisting Habitat for Humanity of the N.C. Sandhills at the latest build site and at the ReStore.
“We have around 140 volunteers that are participating with our annual ‘Day of Caring’ event this year,” Parrish said. “We look forward to giving back to our community and helping our agencies complete projects. Most of these volunteers have participated for several years and some have assisted all 10 years.”
The United Way of Richmond County continues to partner with BackPack Pals, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, Leak Street Alumni, Richmond County 4-H Clubs, Sandhills Children’s Center, Richmond County Schools Exceptional Children’s Program, Richmond County Aging Services, Samaritan Colony, Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills, Richmond County Literacy Council, Pee Dee Pregnancy Resource Center, American Red Cross, New Horizon’s Life and Family Services, Our Daily Bread, Richmond County Rescue Squad and The Salvation Army.
In 2018, United Way partnering agencies provided service to 19,756 individuals and served them 166,350 times, according to the press release. So far in 2019, the agencies have served 7,462 individuals and served them 77,370 times.
