WARRANTS: Rockingham man suspected of attempted gun shop break-in had 24 crack rocks at jail

ROCKINGHAM — A man already out on bail with pending charges is accused of trying to break into a firearms retailer and having drugs in the Richmond County Jail.

The Rockingham Police Department has charged 21-year-old Nakeem Ladarious McKenzie, who has addresses listed on both Gore Street and Kinney Street, with trying to break into Scott’s Tactical on Long Drive in the early morning hours of Jan. 9.

According to an incident report, a $15 lock was damaged in the attempt.

The warrant states that McKenzie was attempting to break into the gun shop “with the intent to commit larceny.”

McKenzie was arrested Jan. 14 and charged with a felony count of attempted breaking or entering of a building. He was given a $20,000 secured bond, with a note on court documents indicating that he was out on bail facing charges of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, injury to personal property, simple assault and resisting a public officer. Those charges were filed by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

At the jail, according to a warrant, officers reportedly found 24 individually wrapped rocks of crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana on his person.

For that, McKenzie was charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine; possession of marijuana greater than half an ounce up to 1 ½ ounces, and possession of a controlled substance on jail premises — and an additional $20,000 secured bond.

McKenzie is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 20 on the Rockingham charges and March 12 on the county charges.

He was being held on a combined $40,000 secured bond the afternoon of Jan. 29.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

McKenzie was convicted of simple assault in 2017, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.
