Wind advisory issued for Richmond County as Hurricane Zeta approaches Carolinas

Accuweather

ROCKINGHAM — Strong winds could impact Richmond County and most of North Carolina on Thursday as Hurricane Zeta makes its way across the southeast.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for many counties between U.S. 17 and Interstate 77 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday.

Forecasters say south winds of 15-25 mph are expected, with gusts up to 45 mph. Those gusts could blow around unsecured objects and break limbs out of trees, resulting in power outages.

Thunderstorms could become severe in the afternoon with the possibility of isolated tornadoes, according to NWS.

Parts of western North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia are under a tropical storm warning.

The hurricane strengthened to a category 2 storm earlier on Wednesday with 110 mph winds, making landfall just after 5 p.m. in southeastern Louisiana.

The heaviest rains should stay west of Interstate 85 as Zeta makes its way up the Appalachian Mountains into and across Virginia on Thursday.
