Anayjah Dumas: The Official Richmond County Female Student-Athlete of the Week

ROCKINGHAM — Anayjah Dumas, a junior track and field competitor, has been named the Official Richmond County Female Student-Athlete of the Week presented by Rockingham NC Self Storage.

A three-year hurdler and jumper for the Lady Raiders, Dumas earned points for the Lady Raider track and field team during Thursday’s home meet to help Richmond to a second-place finish.

With the regular season over and the team gearing up for the conference championship meet later this week, Dumas earned her first career recognition.

“CLASSROOM CREDITS” WITH ANAYJAH DUMAS

An in-season student-athlete for two-thirds of the school year, Dumas has made it a priority to take care of business in the classroom.

This year she’s taken honors classes at Richmond Senior High School, as well as dual-enrollment courses at Richmond Community College. 

Currently, Dumas has a 3.925 weighted GPA. She’s also a member of the National Beta Club and the Raider Diamond Club. 

Earning As in three of her four classes during the fall semester, Dumas had them in English III Honors, Civic Literacy Honors and Weight Training Honors. She also earned college credits in English 111.

This spring, Dumas is taking three more honors classes at the high school — Chemistry Honors, Math 3 Honors and Weight Training Honors. Her course load also includes Health Science I.

“My favorite class this semester is math,” Dumas said. “I really like what we do in there and my teacher, Mrs. Floyd, is really cool. 

“I want to become a traveling nurse,” she added of her future plans. “Or something like that in the medical field. I’m thinking about going to Winston-Salem State because they have a great nursing program.”

“ON THE TRACK” WITH ANAYJAH DUMAS

The Lady Raiders hosted the final regular-season meet of the season last week and placed second overall with 50 points.

Dumas, a multi-event contestant for Richmond, secured seven points across three events. Winning the meet was Union Pines High School (73.5 points).

Her biggest contribution of the afternoon came in the 100-meter hurdles, which saw her place first overall. A time of 16.89 seconds was her fastest time in the event this spring and also added five points to Richmond’s total.

Dumas finished the 100-meter hurdles ahead of teammate JaMya Fuller, who crossed the finish line in second place in 17.23 seconds.

With a pair of fourth-place finishes in two jumping events, Dumas rounded out her seven-point performance.

In the long jump, she landed at a final mark of 13 feet, 3 inches. Dumas then competed in the triple jump, launching out to a distance of 28 feet, 8.5 inches.

The Lady Raiders will compete in the SAC championship meet Friday at Pinecrest High School. Events will start at 2 p.m.
