HAMLET — For the third straight school year, the athletics department at Richmond Senior High School will be under the direction of a new athletic director.

In a press release issued by Richmond County Schools Monday afternoon, James Johnson was named Richmond’s new AD.

Johnson’s hiring came after former athletic director Mike Way, who was hired for the position in July 2023, resigned nearly two weeks ago to pursue a career outside of public education.

Prior to Way’s hiring, Rob Ransom served as Richmond’s athletic director during the 2019-20 through the 2022-23 school years.

No stranger to Richmond County or the school’s athletic programs, Johnson returns to RCS after two years away. He’s spent the past two years as the defensive coordinator at Pinecrest High School.

The press release shared that “With more than 20 years of experience in high school athletics, Johnson is well-prepared to lead and support the Raider athletic programs.”

Last year, Johnson was one of three finalists interviewed for the position after a search that took most of the summer break.

“We’re excited to welcome James back to Richmond Senior High School and believe his extensive experience will greatly benefit our athletic programs,” said Principal Joyce McRae in the press release.

Johnson’s first role in athletics was as a coach for the junior varsity football team at Richmond, where he quickly realized his passion for coaching.

“I initially went to school for engineering but wasn’t sure it was right for me,” Johnson shared in the press release. “A couple of my coaches and mentors from Richmond encouraged me to explore teaching and coaching, which had always interested me. After my first year, I knew it was what I wanted to do.

“I’m excited to return to Richmond as the athletic director,” Johnson continued. “I look forward to working with our coaches, students and the entire Raider community to build a successful program.”

The release said Johnson has many notable accomplishments in his coaching career, including contributing to several conference and state championship-winning teams.

However, “he believes the most rewarding aspect of coaching and athletic administration is watching kids grow and develop.”

During his time at Richmond, Johnson coached several positions before taking on the role of defensive coordinator for the varsity football team under former head coach Bryan Till. He’s also served as the head football coach at West Stanly High School.

As the athletic director, Johnson will oversee all aspects of the Raider athletics program, including coordinating schedules, supporting coaches and ensuring facilities are prepared for games and practices, the release stated.

“His leadership will play an important role in maintaining the high standards of Raider athletics and continuing to build a program that allows all student-athletes to excel,” the district said.

Johnson will begin his new role at the end of September.

“James Johnson brings valuable knowledge and a true passion for athletics to Richmond Senior High School,” commented Dr. Joe Ferrell, Superintendent of Richmond County Schools.

“I am confident that his leadership will have a significant impact in advancing our athletic program and supporting our students.”
