BREAKING: RSHS varsity football game moved to Thursday at Seventy-First; JV Raiders pushed to Monday

FAYETTEVILLE – Richmond Senior High School athletic director Ricky Young announced Tuesday morning that the Raider varsity football team’s game this week has been bumped up a day due to heavy rains forecasted for Friday.

The Raiders (7-1, 6-0 SAC) will travel to Seventy-First High School (7-1, 6-0 SAC) on Thursday, Oct. 25, instead of Friday, and play the Falcons at 7:30 p.m. It is both teams’ biggest competition on the 2018 campaign, as they are both tied atop the Sandhills Athletic Conference standings. The winner will take an outright lead of the SAC with just two games remaining in the regular season, and it holds big playoff implications.

Due to hurricane related delays that postponed the season for two weeks in mid-September, it’s imperative for Richmond and the other SAC schools to maintain the rest of the regular season schedule without further delay. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has already extended the football season one week, allowing missed games to be made up. Richmond is set to make up its game against Purnell Swett High School from Sept. 21 on Friday, Nov. 9.

Another postponement or delayed game may result in the game not being played this season due to NCHSAA requirements that say when records need to be submitted, which could impact No. 5 Richmond and No. 12 Seventy First’s playoff seeding.

Second year head coach Bryan Till was not available at the time of this publication to comment on the game being pushed forward. The junior varsity football game between the two schools, which was originally scheduled for Thursday at RSHS at 6:30 p.m., has been rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 29 at the same time.

As more information or quotes become available, ROSports will report on them. ROSports will also publish a weekly preview between the two teams in Thursday’s edition.
