“SCORING GOALS” WITH C’NEDRA HINSON

The Lady Raiders won a game and lost two last week, but Hinson emerged as a helpful player in the scoring column. She scored goals in back-to-back games against Hoke County and Union Pines high schools.

Against the Lady Bucks on Tuesday, Hinson scored the game-winner in the 34th minute, helping the Lady Raiders enter the win column against Sandhills Athletic Conference opponents.

In what proved to be a 1-0 win, Hinson collected a cross on a corner kick from Cheyenne Jacobs and scored the ball along the back post.

Three nights later in a 2-1 loss in double overtime to Union Pines, Hinson’s goal in the first half of regulation helped force the game into extra time.

Hinson scored her goal in the 26th minute, erasing a one-goal deficit. Again, she collected a shot in front of the net after teammate Allie Rodgers sent a strike into the box.

Hinson’s efforts to find the back of the net twice accounted for all of the Lady Raiders’ goals in three matches.

With three goals on the season, Hinson and the Lady Raiders (4-6) will host non-conference Montgomery Central High School (1-1-1) at home on Monday. Varsity will start at 6 p.m.

RAPID RESPONSES WITH C’NEDRA HINSON

ROSports: Explain the success you had in scoring two goals in three games last week and how that helped the team.

Hinson: “It was just being in the right place at the right time. I knew I had to time my run on the cross from Cheyenne, who has a strong cross to the backside. I saw it coming and it landed in front of me and I tapped it in.

“The second one, I knew we needed a goal to tie the game. Allie had a great shot and I managed to be there in front of the net to score. That helped us get to overtime and the first goal helped us get our first conference win.”

ROSports: What is the team’s mentality right now heading into a busy week and what do you and the team want to continue to work on?

Hinson: “We are just trying to be level-headed and humble. We want to make sure we’re confident and not doubting ourselves when we play.

“Right now we need to continue to talk more, believe in each other and work and play hard each game.”

ROSports: Who is your biggest role model and how has that person helped you?

Hinson: “Coach (Teresa) Mason is definitely a role model to me. Ever since sixth grade, she’s always been there and pushed me to do my best in class and in sports.

“She’s always been someone who I’ve looked up to and helped me no matter what. Even when I would be in trouble, she made sure I got the right consequences to make me a better person.”

The Richmond Observer will publish two more Official Richmond County Athletes of the Week next week.
