Couples moves up the leaderboard in SAS Championship

CARY— Golf Hall of Famer Fred Couples followed up a good first round with a solid second round on Saturday at the SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club.

Couples shot the second-best score of the day with a -4 under round of 68 to move himself up the leaderboard into a tie for first place with first round leader Y.E. Yang.

Couples had a particularly strong back nine carding birdies on the 10th,12th,15th and 17th to set himself up for a final round pairing on Sunday’s final round.

Couples’ 68 was the third-best round of the day, with Ken Duke shooting a -5 67 and Champions Tour season leader Steven Alker carding a bogey-free second round 66 to move up 34 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for sixth place.

Yang’s first marks on the card on his front nine was a double bogey on the 6th hole. Yang would quickly bounce back though with birdies on two out of the next three holes to get back to even par for the day before finishing his back nine -2 for a second-round score of 70 with a share of the lead with Couples.
