ROCKINGHAM — Sophomore cross country runner Sheccid Heaton joins sports editor Kyle Pillar in this edition of Course Side Chats.

After having a breakout freshman season last year, Heaton is back with the Lady Raiders this fall. She proved to be a consistent top-three runner for head coach Jessica Covington in 2019, and hopes to continue to improve as the new season approaches.

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ cross country teams have started voluntary workouts, with the new season slated to start in mid November. Because of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s revised calendar, cross country and volleyball will be the first two sports to begin the 2020-2021 sports schedule.

In her interview, Heaton talks about how good it is to be back with the team. She breaks down some of the things Richmond has been working on during workouts, as well as explaining how the new course outline at Hinson Lake is making her and her teammates better.

Heaton closes by highlighting the “family” atmosphere that she and her fellow Lady Raider runners share.
