ROCKINGHAM — Dave Crosswhite won a family feud Saturday to claim the Bob Reed Memorial Hemi Shootout title before rain forced cancelation of the final rounds of racing in the 28th annual Griffin Motors Mopars at the Rock all-Chrysler drag race and car show at Rockingham Dragway.
Crosswhite used the 572-inch aluminum hemi in his 1968 Dodge Dart to turn back brother Tank Crosswhite’s 1964 Dodge Coronet in a showdown on The Rock’s eighth-mile course. The winner stopped the timers in 5.520 seconds at 126.42 mph.
Because of the weather, money posted in the other racing categories was split among those still active when the rains came. In the Challenger Shootout, that included Eric and Stephanie Wallace of Union Grove. Eric Wallace also still was in contention in the Trophy Class when officials were forced to suspend competition.
In addition to racing among classic and current Dodges, Plymouths, Chryslers, Jeeps and RAM pickup trucks, more than 100 shows entrants entered 26 different awards presented in a variety of car show classes that will be showcased in the magazine Mopar Action, which was represented at the event by editor Cliff Gromer.
The “Editor’s Choice” award went to Michael Sipe of Lincolnton with his Dodge Colt. The Best of Show, picked by the professional car show judges, was Glen Tani of Raleigh with his 1970 Challenger and the Best of Show Truck award went to Nat Wolfe, Sherrills Ford, and his 1983 Jeep.
The MOPARS of Fayetteville was awarded the Best Club Participation honor.
Michael Sipe’s Dodge Colt won Editor’s Choice for Mopar Action magazine in this weekend’s 28th annual Griffin Motors Mopars at the Rock.
