Crowder drops 36 points in JV Raiders’ 5th straight win

ROCKINGHAM — Winning its fifth straight game, the Richmond junior varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Scotland High School Tuesday.

Playing on their home court, the JV Raiders overcame a slow start and defeated the JV Fighting Scots 62-47.

Freshman point guard Chance Crowder finished with a game-high 36 points, one of eight JV Raiders to find the basket.

Sophomore Yusaun Harrison added seven points, freshman BJ Hinson scored six points and freshman Andrae Streeter had four points.

Rounding out the scoring were Elijah Peterkin (three points) and Josiah Brewington, Mikai King and Adrion Pore (all with two points).

Richmond trailed after the first quarter, but used a 22-point second quarter to shift its momentum.

Scotland began the game with a 14-6 lead at the end of the first eight minutes. Brewington scored his two points, Crowder made a free throw and Hinson led the way with a three-pointer.

Free throws played a big role in the JV Raiders’ win, who finished 16-for-26 at the line. Crowder was 14-for-21, and sank six of his seven tries in the second quarter.

Richmond went on a 22-8 run in the second quarter to jump ahead 28-22 at halftime. To go along with his free throws, Crowder also scored a three-pointer and a bucket to give him 12 points at the half.

Adding to the run, Harrison got on the board with two field goals and a free throw for five points. Peterkin drained a triple, Streeter scored two points and Hinson hit a free throw.

Richmond outscored the JV Fighting Scots by six points in the third stanza to open its lead to 44-32.

Crowder accounted for 14 of Richmond’s 16 points. He made a trio of triples and knocked down five foul shots. Netting the other basket was Harrison.

Distancing themselves for good, the JV Raiders used two points apiece from Hinson, King, Pore and Streeter in the fourth quarter.

Closing the game on an 18-15 run, Crowder had his final 10 points on four field goals and two more free throws.

The JV Raiders (6-3, 4-2 Sandhills Athletic Conference) will host Southern Lee High School Friday at 6 p.m.
