ROCKINGHAM — A week after the announcement of the CARS Tour making its way to Rockingham Speedway for the opening race of the 2021 season, NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he believes it will be a challenge to host the race.

During the Dale Jr. Download podcast’s “Ask Jr.” segment, a fan asked about the possibility of NASCAR returning to The Rock after the announcement of the CARS Tour race that’s scheduled for March 6.

“With Rockingham being added to the 2021 CARS Tour schedule for next year, do you think it has the potential to make it way back on the NASCAR schedule?”

Earnhardt replied quickly saying the track’s surface would need a repave.

“They’re going to need to repave the racetrack,” he said. “I think the surface itself is far too gone. I don’t even know why they’re running a CARS Tour race there with as bad as turn one is. It’s busted up really bad.”

Earnhardt said he “appreciates the idea to keeping that racetrack relevant,” and that if any of NASCAR’s national touring series ever returned to The Rock, “it’ll be because of these little races like the CARS Tour race and the effort that goes into trying to have this race.”

Earnhardt says it will be a “monumental effort” to pull off the race.

“The people that are going to put that together … it’ll be a lot of work,” he said. “So credit to them, but I was a little surprised to see it actually be on that schedule, to be quite honest.”
