Ellerbe baseball and softball sweep Cordova, Rockingham baseball falls to Anson Orange

The regular season wrapped up for several Richmond County middle school baseball and softball teams on Monday.

Wildcats edge Cavaliers in finale

The Ellerbe Middle School baseball team won its second straight game to end the season on Monday.

Hosting in-county opponent Cordova Middle School, the Wildcats earned an 8-6 win over the Cavaliers.

Notching his second win on the mound in as many games, Colton Brown threw a complete game for Ellerbe. He also struck out nine batters in the process.

Leading the Wildcats at the plate were Ethan Hogan and Blake Terry, who both had two hits. Jake Richardson and Camden Williams both registered a hit for Ellerbe.

Finishing the regular season with a 2-8 record, Shelton said the Wildcats will likely not make the playoffs. No other information was provided for Cordova baseball at the time of publication.

Lady Wildcats mercy-rule Cordova

Helping sweep Cordova on Monday, the Lady Wildcat softball team earned a mercy-rule win over the Lady Cavaliers.

Ellerbe won 15-0 in four innings and scored three runs in the first, before adding four runs in the second, five more in the third and three runs in the fourth.

Carley McCormick pitched a complete game for the Lady Wildcats and struck out 10 batters for her 12 total outs. She gave up just two hits in the win.

In the first, Kaylee Connor (single), Addison Raines (walk) and MacKenzie Hill (single) all scored for Ellerbe. 

McCormick struck out the side in order in the top of the second, leading to Lilly Hill (single), Connor (single), Raines (double) and Kenley Smith (walk) to score and make it a 7-0 lead.

Scoring for the Lady Wildcats as part of a five-run third were Abby Robinson (walk), Addison Connor (walk), Hill (single) and McCormick (single) and Kaylee Connor (single).

Capping the win in the home half of the fourth were two-out runs by Addison Connor (walk), Hill (single) and McCormick (walk).

Collecting hits for the Lady Cavaliers were Tatum Watson (single) and Caylee Allison (single). Pitcher Madison Hancock collected five strikeouts for Cordova.

Ellerbe finished the regular season with a 5-4 record. Cordova (2-5) will close its regular season in a make-up game at Sandy Grove on Tuesday.

Rockets fall short at Anson

Returning to the diamond for the first time since spring break, the Rockingham Middle School baseball team suffered a road loss to close the regular season.

Traveling to Anson Middle School, the Rockets lost to Anson Orange by a final score of 10-6.

Tyler McKenzie was the leader at the plate for Rockingham in the loss, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jason Gainey also chipped in two hits in his three trips to the plate, and Andrae Streeter had one hit and drove in two runs.

Caden Nolan connected for a hit and added one RBI, and Preston Fann did the same for Rockingham. Other players to collect one hit apiece were Carter Visingard, Lucky Cipriani and Maddox Frye.

Finishing the season with a 6-4 record, head coach Jamie McDonald said he expects the Rockets to make the playoffs and be on the road in the first round.

Now Richmond County’s middle school baseball and softball teams will await the playoff seeding, which will start later in the week. The Richmond Observer will continue its coverage of middle school athletics.
