RICHMOND COUNTY — In action Monday, the Ellerbe Middle School baseball team picked up its second win of the spring, while the Rockingham Middle School baseball and softball teams suffered their first losses.

Goodwin’s complete game helps Wildcats to second win

The Ellerbe Wildcats collected a big-time Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference win at home Monday, defeating the visiting Anson Middle School Blue team 7-3.

Eighth grader Brycen Goodwin was the winning pitcher, tossing a complete game, while recording six strikeouts in the process. He allowed the Bearcats to knock five hits and draw three walks, but the Ellerbe bats brought the damage.

Fellow eighth grader Brent Hayes went a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon at the plate, hitting all singles and driving in two RBIs. Jullian Cline was the only other Wildcat batter to have multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Seventh grader Vance Goodwin helped out with an RBI single in the win.

“This was a big win for us,” head coach Allen Adeimy sai. “We’ve been right there the last couple of games and lost it late. We kept our focus today.”

Ellerbe improved to 2-3 on the season and will return to action next Monday at West Hoke Middle School. The Ellerbe softball team didn’t play Monday.

Lady Rockets’ efforts come up short at Carver

Entering Monday’s game at Carver Middle School in Laurel Hill, the Lady Rockets were perfect on the season. Despite a solid effort by Savanna Mullins in the circle, Rockingham fell 5-1 to the Lady Eagles.

Eighth grader Sydney Smith had the best day at the plate for her team, going 2-for-3 with the Lady Rockets’ lone RBI. She hit a triple in the top of the third inning to score fellow eighth grader Savannah Jordan.

Other Rockingham players to collect a hit were Mullins, Allie Miller and Keyoni Nichols. From the circle, Mullins allowed five runs on eight hits, and struck out five Lady Eagles.

Now 2-1 on the spring, Morgan Davis’ team will be back in action Wednesday at Spring Hill Middle School.

Rockets no-hit by Carver

The Rocket baseball team didn’t have any better luck against the Eagles, losing on the road 3-0. Carver’s Alex Hatcher threw a seven-inning no-hitter, striking out 15 batters and walking just two.

Jamie McDonald’s team suffered its first loss of the spring and also sit at 2-1. The Rockets will return to play on Wednesday at Spring Hill.
