ROCKINGHAM — An exciting season of golf for Talley Webb was capped with a final accolade this week.
Making her name and game known around the local golf scene, Webb earned a spot on the 2024 All-Sandhills Athletic Conference golf team.
The freshman who attends Richmond Senior High School was the first Lady Raider golfer to achieve the milestone since former golfer Hailey Miller did it as a junior in 2018.
Unlike other sports where coaches choose All-Conference teams, golf uses players’ yearlong scoring averages to determine the top 12 golfers in the SAC.
Released by the conference Monday, Webb was one of those dozen golfers. She had a nine-hole average score of 46.6 during her five best rounds.
Leading the conference was Ashley Lee of Pinecrest High School, who was tabbed Player of the Year. She averaged a score of 34.6 and recently finished second overall in the NCHSAA 4A Central regional championship.
“This means a lot to me and it shows that I worked hard for what I wanted,” Webb said. “It’s an honor to represent Richmond.
“I think my golf game got better overall this season,” she continued. “And that’s because I practiced a lot and played in tournaments. My putting is what I think I improved most, especially being able to read greens and judge speeds.”
Other All-Conference golfers, in order by lowest average, were Pinecrest’s Rachel Joyce (35.0), Kaitlyn Kruczek (35.4), Charlotte Schroen (36.4) and Kate Grantham (38.2).
They were followed by Sydney Pomeranz (Lee County, 38.4), Angela Chuakamjan (Pinecrest, 41.0), Claire Smith (Scotland, 42.0), Aleah Farlow (Union Pines, 42.6), Savannah Phillips (Lee County, 43.8) and Celine Trumm (Union Pines, 46.0).
Brandon Reynolds, the head coach at Union Pines High School, was named the SAC’s Coach of the Year.
"Talley had an amazing season, made even more impressive when you consider she is a ninth grader who competed in her first season,” Richmond head coach Keith Parsons said.
“She did everything she could to prepare, practicing all summer and through our season, even when we didn't have team activities. I don't think anyone who knows how much she put into her game is surprised she earned this honor.”
“I want to be at states next year,” Webb closed. “And over the next two years, I want to become the No. 1 golfer in the conference.”
