HAMLET – Hamlet’s Ryelan Lyerly scored a team-high 13 points in Hamlet’s 24-23 overtime victory over visiting Sandy Grove Middle School on Monday.

It appeared as though the Lady Red Rams were going to put the game away early.  After a Sandy Grove three-pointer started the scoring in the first, Hamlet went on a 20-4 run, beginning with a Lyerly three-ball from the corner and ending with back-to-back putbacks by Jamia Crowder just before the half, sending the Lady Red Rams into the break with a 20-7 lead.

Sandy Grove’s defense stiffened up and only allowed one Hamlet field goal the entire second half.  The Lady Panthers outscored Hamlet 15-2 in the third and fourth quarters to set up overtime.

With the game knotted at 22 points, both teams played aggressively on defense, but Crowder found a way.  After a short-range jumper by Hamlet’s Da’veah Robinson rimmed out, Crowder hauled in the rebound and returned it to the hoop for the only field goal in the overtime period.

With 53 seconds remaining, a Sandy Grove free throw cut the Lady Red Ram’s lead to one.  When a last-second shot from the Panthers rimmed out, the home crowd went into a frenzy as the Lady Red Rams ran to their bench to celebrate.

Along with the 13 points from Lyerly, Crowder scored six for the Lady Red Rams, Robinson and Shadaisha Lindsey each finished with two points, and Orena Drake added one.

HAMLET – After losing a close 37-35 decision to East Hoke Middle School last week to open its season, Hamlet rebounded with a huge win on its home court on Monday.  Nine Red Rams scored as Hamlet easily disposed of the visiting Sandy Grove Panthers 59-35.

Early on, it looked as if it was going to be a close one.  With just one minute remaining in the first quarter, Hamlet held a 15-13 lead.  Two quick strikes by JV Drake before the buzzer sent Hamlet into the second period with a 19-13 advantage.

The Red Rams extended their lead to 10 points, 34-24, with 37 seconds left in the half, but a Panther buzzer-beater reduced their deficit by two going into the break.

Hamlet’s fast-paced offense wore out the Panthers late in the game, allowing the Red Rams to continue to pull away.  Hamlet outscored Sandy Grove 25-9 in the second half.

Xavier Wall led the Red Rams with 13 points in the win, Paul McNeil was close behind with 12 more, CC Wall scored nine points, Drake added eight, Z’Yion Baldwin had seven, David McNair netted four, and Jamarion Bryant, Dominic Joye and Ethan Locklear each contributed two points.
