Hamlet, Rockingham boys’ basketball teams improve to 2-0

The Hamlet and Rockingham middle school boys basketball teams both improved to 2-0 on Thursday.

Red Rams outlast Sandy Grove in OT

Playing at home, the Red Rams defeated Sandy Grove Middle School 36-30 for their second win this week.

Hamlet took an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter before Sandy Grove charged back to take the lead. 

Amer Morrison made a free throw in the final minute to tie the game. Both teams failed to convert chances to win in regulation.

Morrison opened the extra period with two free throws to give the Red Rams the lead for good, and added a steal and a layup to make the advantage four points. 

Evan Hodges added a bucket down the stretch to seal it for Hamlet.

Morrison finished with 17 points and Hodges added 8 points. Chamaure Shaw had 4 points and Terande Spencer finished with 3 points and 11 rebounds. 

Other scorers were Zamarion Robinson (2 points) and A.J. James (2 points).

Hamlet (2-0) returns to action on Jan. 6 at Spring Hill Middle School.

Rockets rout Carver for second win

Rockingham traveled to Carver Middle School and rolled past the Eagles 43-12.

Scoring 17 points in the first quarter, and 18 points in the second period, the Rockets used a strong start to take a 35-2 lead into halftime.

Head coach Julius Bowden said the Rockets were “aggressive on defense” and that it was “a great team win.”

Jayden Hamilton netted a game-high 18 points, all in the first half for Rockingham. Andrae Streeter had 6 points and Chance Crowder chipped in 5 points.

Other scorers were Tyler McKenzie and Bob Pegues, both with 4 points, and Jarret Diggs, Kerick Hariston and Domonic Tillman with 2 points each.

The Rockets (2-0) will host Anson Middle School on Jan. 10.
