LAURINBURG — Ending its regular season the same way it started it, the Lady Raider soccer team picked up a win on Thursday.

Earning their second consecutive Sandhills Athletic Conference victory, the Lady Raiders defeated Scotland High School 6-1.

The win also tied Richmond Senior High School’s record for the longest winning streak by an athletic program against Scotland.

Collecting their 18th straight win over the Lady Scots (2014-2023), the Lady Raiders matched the football team’s streak from 1995-2010.

Netting three goals in each half, Richmond had a pair of senior two-goal scorers — Sheccid Heaton and Cheyenne Jacobs. Both players also registered an assist.

Adding onto the barrage of goals were senior C’Nedra Hinson and sophomore Mariana Mendoza.

As a team, the Lady Raiders sent 27 shots on frame at Scotland goalkeeper Terra Anderson.

Both teams scored their first respective goal in the opening four minutes of the match.

In the second minute, Heaton slid a pass from the right side into the box, where Jacobs found twine from 10 yards to make it 1-0.

On a counterattack two minutes later, Emma Clark got behind Richmond’s defense and scored to knot the game at one goal apiece.

The Lady Raiders dominated possession for the rest of the game, resulting in two more goals before intermission.

Heaton scored both of her goals in the first half, the first coming in the 31st minute. Taking a shot that hit the post, Heaton followed it and used her body to push the ball into the net.

With 55 seconds left in the opening 40 minutes, Heaton netted her fifth goal of the spring. Ripping the ball from the top right corner of the 18-yard box, her shot sailed across the goal mouth and into the left side netting to make it 3-0.

Jacobs registered her ninth goal of the season, tied for the team lead, when she made a run down the middle of the box. Going 1v1 with Anderson, she put the ball past her to extend the lead to 4-1.

Mendoza notched her third goal of the year, and second in as many games, just four minutes later. With Jacobs on the assist and making a run down the left side, Mendoza scored from inside the six-yard box.

Adding an insurance goal was Hinson, who also found herself in a 1v1 situation. Getting behind the defense, she booted a low, hard shot into the back of the net. It was her second goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Quanna Bostic played the majority of the game between the posts for Richmond, with senior Tatum Rhyne holding Scotland (3-11-1, 2-10 SAC) out of the goal for the last part of the second half.

Richmond (12-7-1, 6-6 SAC) finished the regular season alone in fourth place in the SAC standings. The SAC tournament will start next week and the final seedings are still to be determined.

The Richmond Observer will publish an SAC tournament preview article over the weekend.
