CAREER NIGHT WITH JAMYIA LINDSEY

Richmond opened its week with a win over Hoke County on Tuesday, defeating the Lady Bucks 70-24. A free throw at the 2:19 mark of the third quarter started the running clock.

Lindsey netted 22 points in the win, including 18 points in the first half. She scored 10 points in the first quarter, which saw the Lady Raiders take a 28-7 lead. In the second, Lindsey connected on two more field goals and four free throws for 8 points.

A pair of buckets early in the third quarter capped Lindsey’s scoring against Hoke County, which was her sixth game this season scoring at least 20 points.

Three nights later in a closer contest, Lindsey sounded off for a new career-high 34 points against Union Pines. The Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Vikings 58-39, with Lindsey scoring 22 points in the second half.

Netting 8 points in the first quarter, Lindsey helped put Richmond up 12-7. She added 4 points in the second and the team went ahead 27-15 at the break.

Despite facing a double-team on defense by the Lady Vikings, Lindsey managed to score 9 points in the third and put the game away with 13 points in the fourth. Much of her scoring was done driving through the lane and at the free throw line.

According to Maxpreps.com, Lindsey is averaging 20.2 points per game this season. She’s ranked first in scoring in the SAC and first in the state for the freshman class, and is currently sixth in scoring in 4A play.

RAPID RESPONSES WITH JAMYIA LINDSEY

ROSports: Describe your thoughts on your new career high and what makes it possible for you to score and lead the team.

Lindsey: “I’m happy and proud of myself for that performance. Our man-to-man and press defense played well, which led to a lot of steals and fastbreak layups for me. I just go out there and play and try to score 8 points per quarter.

“The coaches put me in position to lead, and I try to help the girls get to where they need to be. We’ve built a good bond over the season and that makes it easier.”

ROSports: How have you seen your game develop over the first half of the season? What are some areas you want to get better with?

Lindsey: “I’ve gotten better at attacking the basket, and on defense I’m doing better getting more rebounds and helping the bigs boxing out in the paint. And that leads to me being able to push the ball up the court.

“I still want to get better with my pull up shooting off the dribble.”

ROSports: The team is off to its best start in conference play since 2010-11. What has been working well for the Lady Raiders and how is the team going to continue to stay at the top of the conference?

Lindsey: “We’re building off each game, whether it’s a win or loss. How we play each night determines how we play the next game, and we try to look at each game as its own lesson. We’ve also played some really good teams, which has also made us better.

“Our goal is to continue practicing, making adjustments and knowing our jobs on the court. If we stay confident and try our best, we should continue to win a lot of games.”
