JV Lady Raiders end season on three-game winning streak

The JV Lady Raiders capped their 2019 season with a three-game winning streak.

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School junior varsity softball team capped off its rollercoaster 2019 campaign with a three-game winning streak, including a sweep of rival Scotland High School.

Head coach Casey Campolieta and the JV Lady Raiders started their streak on Tuesday on the road against the Lady Fighting Scots, rolling to a 21-0 victory in five innings. Sophomore pitcher Kearston Bruce notched the win from the circle, striking out 10 batters.

Campolieta noted that “most of the runs were walked in.”

In the first inning, freshman Taylor Young had a double, freshman Kassie Smith had a base hit and sophomore Georgia Grace Anderson hit a sac fly to center, and saw another run score on a throwing error.

The third inning saw sophomore Shyann Byrd, Bruce and freshman Marley Moss pick up singles, Anderson cranked a double in the sixth, and Bruce, Smith and Young rounded out the game with singles in the seventh.

In between the two Scotland games, the Lady Raiders traveled to Anson High School on Wednesday and defeated the Lady Bearcats 12-2 in five innings. Bruce struck out nine batters and doubled home a couple of runs, Smith had a single in the first, and Young knocked a base hit to center.

Richmond (7-8) closed the season out with a 22-2 mercy-rule win over Scotland at home on Thursday, with Bruce earning her seventh win of the season. She struck out four batters.

Anderson had two RBIs in the first, and added two doubles later in the game. Darice Martin had a single, Kierston Gibson, Bruce and Young had a double, and Smith hit a base knock.

After losing their first five games, the Lady Raiders finished their season on a 7-4 run.
