ROCKINGHAM — A close game through the middle innings fell apart late for the junior varsity Renegade baseball team on Wednesday.

Richmond hosted Pinecrest and suffered an 11-4 defeat.

The JV Renegades were outscored 7-1 in the final three innings, and are winless through their first two games.

Keith Cummings made the start on the mound for Richmond. He allowed eight runs on nine hits through 5.1 innings, while walking four batters with two strikeouts.

Pitching by committee during the remainder of the game, Richmond used Jake Veach (0.2 IP) and Michael Osentowski (1 IP, three hits, three runs).

Pinecrest scored a pair of runs in the top of the first and added two more in the fourth to extend its lead to 4-0.

The JV Renegades erased most of that deficit in the home half, plating three runs. Adan King hit an RBI double to score the first run, bringing in Tristian Chavis (single).

With Chavis on third, a balk was called and allowed him to score. Richmond’s final run of the inning came when Jake Richardson reached safely on an error, giving King time to race home.

Pinecrest opened its lead with a run in the fifth and back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh.

Down to their final three outs, the JV Renegades scratched out one more run. Drew Gause recorded an RBI on a fielder’s choice back to the mound, scoring Braden Baucom (error).

Richmond connected for five hits, including two each from Evan Hodges and C.J. Jenkins. Chavis and Jenkins had a double.

Gause and King both notched an RBI and the team drew three walks and struck out seven times.

The JV Renegades (0-1-1) will travel to Northwood on Thursday and start at 4 p.m.
