SOUTHERN PINES — The junior varsity Richmond Renegade baseball team dropped its road contest at Pinecrest on Wednesday.

Playing their second game in a three-day stretch, the JV Renegades fell 12-1 in five innings.

Pinecrest scored solo runs in the first and second innings and added three more in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

Richmond entered the scoring column in the top of the fourth. Jason Gainey was hit by a pitch to start the inning and stole second base to get into scoring position.

In the next at-bat, Preston Fann singled on a line drive to center field and brought home Gainey.

A seven-run home half of the fourth by Pinecrest broke it open. Richmond went down in order in the fifth to end the game early.

The JV Renegades had just three hits in the loss — singles by Fann, Jake Veach and starting pitcher Michael Ostentowski.

Through three innings, Osentowski allowed eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and struck out two batters. Tristian Chavis threw the final inning and surrendered four runs (two earned) on three hits with one strikeout.

Coach Corey Wallace said the team “needed to do a better job of making routine plays” against Pinecrest. Richmond committed four errors in the field.

The JV Renegades (3-4-2) will close out their week at home against Scotland on Thursday, which will begin at 4 p.m.
