ROCKINGHAM — Part of an all-out team effort in Week 5, another member of the Richmond Senior High School football team lands in The Richmond Observer’s weekly feature series.

Keyonta Davis, a senior wide receiver for the Raiders, has been named the Official Richmond County Male Student-Athlete of the Week presented by Rockingham NC Self Storage.

Part of a strong second-half showing by the Raiders’ passing game, Davis recorded two of the team’s four touchdowns in the final two quarters in a win over Southern Lee High School.

Playing football for the first time since his freshman season, and helping Richmond go 1-0 to start Sandhills Athletic Conference play, Davis earned his first career recognition.

“CLASSROOM CREDITS” WITH KEYONTA DAVIS

Now in the first stages of his final year of high school, Davis is not only putting in the reps on the football field, but also in the classroom.

Like many of Richmond’s student-athletes, Davis is a dual enrollment student at the high school and Richmond Community College. This semester he’s taking four classes.

Over at the college, Davis is taking Spanish 111 this fall and will follow that with Spanish 112 in the spring.

At Richmond, he’s enrolled in Business Essentials, Economics and Personal Finance Honors and Weight Training Honors with the football team.

Near the midway point of the first nine-week grading period, Davis has a 3.21 weighted grade point average.

“PAYDIRT” WITH KEYONTA DAVIS

The Raiders started SAC action with a 41-7 win over Southern Lee Friday, which moved the team to a 3-2 overall record.

Davis finished the game with four receptions, half of the Raiders’ total catches, for 83 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. His receiving yards marked a new personal single-game career-high, as did his two scores.

Hauling in both touchdowns in the second half, Davis caught a pair of passes from junior quarterback Domonic Tillman. The short completions were turned into long touchdowns thanks to Davis’ speed.

Scoring through the air on back-to-back drives, Davis’ first score was a 32-yard catch and run. He caught the ball in the right flat and barreled over and past several defenders to score and make it 27-0 with 5:04 left in the third quarter.

A drive later, Davis ran a route over the middle of the field to create space, allowing Tillman to thread a pass to him. Turning up field, Davis ran into the end zone untouched. That 31-yard touchdown capped a five-play, 93-yard drive as the clock rolled over to the fourth quarter.

Through five games this season, Davis has team-highs in receptions (13), receiving yards (194), receiving yards per game (48.5) and receiving touchdowns (three). He’s also averaging 14.9 yards per catch.

Richmond (3-2) continues conference play Thursday at Pinecrest High School (4-0). Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
