ROCKINGHAM — It’s been a busy and successful final stretch of the season for junior wrestler K’Mauri Morgan, the Official Richmond County Male Student-Athlete of the Week presented by Rockingham NC Self Storage.
Qualifying and placing at the 4A Mideast regional tournament, Morgan represented the Richmond Raiders at the state championship meet last week.
Also a three-sport student-athlete who plays football and participates in track and field, this is Morgan’s first career selection.

CLASSROOM CREDITS WITH K’MAURI MORGAN
Roughly a month into his spring semester of his junior year, Morgan is one of many dual-enrollment students at Richmond.
In conjunction with his classes at the high school, he also takes courses at Richmond Community College.
Balancing his school work as a year-round student-athlete, Morgan currently boasts a 3.5 GPA. During the last nine-week period, he had all As and said he’s started the spring with high marks, as well.
At RichmondCC, Morgan is taking Spanish 112 this spring, having completed Spanish 111 in the fall. His courses at Richmond include Civic Literacy Honors, Physical Science and Weight Training Honors.
“STATE QUALIFIER” WITH K’MAURI MORGAN
Starting his run to states, Morgan placed third in the 215-pound weight class at the NCHSAA 4A Mideast regional tournament. He went 4-1 in the regional to reach the podium, securing his first appearance at the state championship.
At regionals, Morgan recorded three pinfall victories for 18 points. In the third-place match, he defeated John Dube of Panther Creek High School in a 14-10 decision for three more points to add to Richmond’s 14th-place score.
Returning to the mat Thursday for the NCHSAA 4A state championship meet at the Greensboro Coliseum, Morgan wrestled in three more matches before being officially eliminated from championship contention.
He opened with a 9-4 loss to Hayden Haynes (McDowell High School), which sent him to the consolation bracket.
In his first of two matches there, Morgan registered his first victory at the state championship. He pinned Jamarious Pegues (Cleveland High School) early in the second round to stay in the hunt.
Morgan’s bid came to an end in the second round of the consolation contest when he was pinned by Kiyon Brown (Athens Drive High School).
On the season, Morgan posted an 18-7 overall record and was Richmond’s lone state qualifier.
