ASHEBORO — The Lady Raider basketball team will spend Tuesdays and Thursdays this month competing in a summer league hosted by Uwharrie Charter Academy.

Fourth-year head coach Teddy Moseley and Richmond are getting an early start on the upcoming 2021-2022 season, which the team hopes to play a full non-conference and conference slate after a shortened season this winter.

The Lady Raiders have already played three games this summer, collecting three wins along the way. On Monday, Richmond defeated Cheraw High School 49-23 and rolled past Marlboro County High School 43-22.

On Tuesday, Richmond edged a veteran Southwestern Randolph High School squad 50-47. Rising junior shooting guard Kyla Sampson had 21 points, while rising freshman point guard Jamyia Lindsey netted 12 points.

“The game against Southwestern Randolph was a good measuring stick for us because they mainly have rising seniors who have been playing together and are a pretty solid team,” Moseley said.

“We have a lot of youth, and for us to contend with them and come out on top with a win was big for us,” he added.

Moseley added that rising senior forward Jamiya Ratliff played well defensively against Southwestern Randolph, blocking “seven or eight shots” in the game. He noted that rising sophomore guard Keyoni Nichols also impressed on defense.

“Kyla is playing really well. She’s faster and I’m really impressed with her defense,” Moseley said.

“Jamyia has continued to get better every game, and once the game slows down for her from making the jump from middle school to high school, she’ll make more and more of a difference.
