ROCKINGHAM — Shots were peppered on frame all game Thursday, but Richmond Senior High School’s girls soccer team couldn’t score.
The Lady Raiders made up Wednesday’s rain out with non-conference Terry Sanford High School, ending in a 0-0 draw.
Richmond put 15 shots on net during the match, outshooting the Lady Bulldogs, who had a dozen shots against junior goalkeeper Quanna Bostic.
Leading the Lady Raiders with three shots apiece were junior Hanna Smith and sophomore Yulissa Avalos.
Senior Allie Rodgers and freshmen Colbie Covington and Mariana Sanchez each tallied two shots on frame. Adding one shot apiece were seniors Jenna Gardner and Gabby Lutz, along with sophomore Jentry Denson.
Terry Sanford (2-1-1) had a goal negated late in the first half when the Lady Bulldogs were whistled for being offsides.
Richmond had three corner kicks in the game, while Terry Sanford had one more opportunity than the home team.
“The girls played better tonight, we knocked the ball around,” head coach Chris Larsen said. “Defensively we corrected some things that we saw last week, which I was pleased with. We got the ball wide and got some crosses on some nice runs.
“We had several opportunities to score, we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net,” he continued. “Terry Sanford had a good keeper back there who gobbled everything up we put at her. Overall, it was a good night and we’ve made some progress from the beginning of the season.”
The Lady Raiders (2-0-1) will travel to non-conference Independence High School (2-1-1) Friday. The varsity-only match will start at 6 p.m.
JV Lady Raiders notch second win
The Richmond junior varsity girls soccer team earned a 4-0 win over Terry Sanford Thursday.
Taking a scoreless tie into the half, the JV Lady Raiders pelted the net with four goals in the final 35 minutes.
Scoring first was Mareliz Sanchez, followed by Kellie Gomez, Cadence Gazoo and Madyson Cloninger.
“It’s good to be 2-0,” head coach Bennie Howard said. “But I told the girls we need to learn to play 70 minutes of soccer, not just 35 minutes.
“We have a couple of practices over the next week to get ready for Pinecrest. Hopefully this win will give us some confidence.”
The JV Lady Raiders (2-0) will return to action on March 15 at Pinecrest High School to start Sandhills Athletic Conference play.
