FAYETTEVILLE — A slow start by the Richmond Senior High School girls’ basketball team, coupled with a low field goal percentage and a mass of turnovers, prevented the Lady Raiders from earning the season sweep against Jack Britt High School.

On the road in Fayetteville Friday, the Lady Raiders couldn’t overcome a 12-0 run in the game’s first five and a half minutes by the Lady Buccaneers, and fell 42-30.

The loss marked the second consecutive game the Lady Raiders were on the wrong side of the scoreboard, as their overall record fell back to 9-9. Against Sandhills Athletic Conference opponents this season, Richmond is 5-4, and now sits alone in fifth place.

“They (Jack Britt)  jumped out 12-0 on us, and we just can’t keep playing from behind,” head coach Teddy Moseley said. “Our first six possessions were turnovers, and one of them was a wide-open layup. We missed so many wide-open layups.”

Moseley added that the Lady Raiders shot 10-for-49 (20.4 percent) from the field, and went 6-for-19 (32 percent) from the free throw line. Another issue that hounded the visiting team was its 31 turnovers.

“The message the whole season has been to stop thinking so much and play the game of basketball,” Moseley added. “We cut it to one (point), and I kept telling them don’t get caught underneath the screen, but they continued to do it.”

Five different Lady Bucs made a basket to start the game 12-0, but a 7-2 run by the Lady Raiders in the final 2:26 of the first quarter cut the deficit to 14-7. All seven of Richmond’s points came in a 24-second span, seeing field goals by Anajah Redfearn and Jakerra Covington, as well as a three-pointer from Jayla McDougald.

The second quarter was also a series of runs, with Jack Britt beginning with a 7-0 spurt that gave the Lady Bucs their biggest lead of the night (14 points), 21-7.

Richmond responded with a 9-0 run in the middle part of the period, starting with a three-pointer from Allexis Swiney. Taliah Wall added a drive in the paint, followed by an Allyiah Swiney triple and a Redfearn free throw.

Layne Maultsby added a contested three-pointer with seven seconds left in the frame to cut the halftime deficit to 25-19.

Out of the break, a defensive slugfest ensued, with only seven combined points being scored in the eight-minute third quarter. It was the only stanza the Lady Raiders outscored Jack Britt, which was a 5-2 tally.

Wall made a basket under the hoop just 20 seconds in on Richmond’s first possession, and the next basket for either team wouldn’t come until McDougald hit a three-pointer with 1:44 to go. McDougald’s shot made it a one-point game, 25-24, but that was the closest Richmond would get.

A 9-0 run by the Lady Bucs to start the fourth helped put the game away, as two three-pointers by Skyler Reilly and seven made free throws by the home team secured the win.

Eight Lady Raiders scored in the loss, with McDougald’s six points serving as the team-high. Allyiah Swiney added five points, while Wall and Allexis Swiney both had four points.

Reilly finished with a game-high 12 points, getting help from Ashara Hayes (eight points). Kaya Goldsby and Kelzie Wilburn contributed with six points each.

Richmond will return to action Tuesday when it travels to Hoke County High School (9-11, 3-7 SAC). Tip is set for 6 p.m.
