Lady Raiders finish second in final regular-season meet

RAEFORD — Closing its regular season at Hoke County High School on Thursday, the Lady Raider track and field team earned second place.

Competing against Sandhills Athletic Conference opponents Hoke County, Pinecrest and Union Pines high schools, Richmond collected 55.5 points.

Winning the meet was Pinecrest (165.5 points), followed by Richmond, Hoke County (26 points) and Union Pines (13).

The Lady Raiders won two events, placed second seven times, earned two third-place marks and rounded out their scoring with five fourth-place results.

Richmond collected its most points in the 100-meter dash, sweeping the top four spots. Winning the event was Isis Covington (12.67 seconds).

Right behind Covington were teammates Akeya Harrison (12.75 seconds), Andrea Ellerbe (13.20 seconds) and Tenaziah McNeil (13.39 seconds). 

The same four runners captured the Lady Raiders’ other win in the 4×100-meter relay. McNeil led off the race, as the baton made its way to Harrison, Ellerbe and Covington for a final time of 49.12 seconds, three seconds faster than second-place Pinecrest (52.16 seconds).

Starting the string of second-place finishes was Olivia Brown in the 200-meter dash, as she crossed the finish line in 29.28 seconds. Winning the event was Pinecrest’s Jenna Kawase (28.55 seconds).

Richmond also placed second in the 4×400-meter relay (4:50.32), which was run by Taylor Newton, Rena Drake, Nyla Stroman and Brooklyn Jemison.

Anayjah Dumas earned second in the long jump (13 feet, 11.5 inches), while also taking third in the 100-meter hurdles (18.90 seconds). Second in the 100 hurdles was Ja’Mya Fuller (17.56 seconds).

Honesty Horne’s throw of 31 feet, 5 inches in the shot put was just one inch behind event winner Azaria Jones of Pinecrest. 

Stroman tied for second place in the triple jump with Amauri Thomas (Pinecrest), both of whom finished with a mark of 29 feet even.

The Lady Raiders’ other top-four placements all came in field events. 

Finishing in fourth place were Drake in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches), Fuller in the triple jump (28 feet, 10 inches), Aniston Griggs in the shot put (27 feet, 3 inches) and Shadea Harrison in the discus (71 feet, 4 inches).

The SAC championship will be held on Thursday at Pinecrest, beginning at 5 p.m.
