Lady Raiders hold Southern Lee to single digits in third straight win

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School girls’ basketball team extended its season-long winning streak to three games on Monday. 

Competing the only time this week, the Lady Raiders took care of business against Southern Lee High School in a 68-7 win.

Remaining perfect in Sandhills Athletic Conference play, Richmond played the entire second half with a running clock after taking a 41-point lead into halftime.

Recording their largest margin of victory this season (61 points), the Lady Raiders were led by a game-high 26 points by junior point guard Jamyia Lindsey.

It was the fourth time in eight games this season she’s scored 24 points or more. Lindsey also had nine steals and five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Jasiah Gilchrist netted 14 points. Seniors C’Niya Hinson and Yasmeen McLaughlin both scored a season-high seven points. Senior Ryelan Lyerly added six points and freshman Madisen Jackson contributed four points.

Rounding out Richmond’s scoring were senior MaKailah Jackson (two points) and senior Cierra Marshall and freshman Kaylan Parsons (one point each).

“It was a good win,” head coach Teddy Moseley said. “However, we came out very, very flat. We need more energy during warm-ups because that translates over to the game.”

The Lady Raiders opened the game on a 19-1 run in the first quarter. Four players for Richmond each had four points on two field goals — Hinson, Madisen Jackson, Lindsey and Lyerly.

The other three points came from  McLaughlin, who drained a three-pointer.

Richmond went on another big run in the second quarter, extending its lead to 44-3 at the break. Lindsey led all scorers with 10 points on four buckets and two free throws.

Gilchrist joined the scoring with a three-pointer and two baskets for her first seven points. Hinson ended her scoring with a triple.

One bucket apiece from MaKailah Jackson and McLaughlin, along with a Parsons foul shot, put the Lady Raiders up 41 points at the half.

A 12-point third-quarter performance from Lindsey saw her collect the majority of Richmond’s 21 points in the stanza. She sat for half of the third and all of the fourth.

Gilchrist scored four more points, Lyerly and McLaughlin both added a bucket and Marshall scored a free throw.

The clock continued to roll into the fourth with Richmond ahad 65-3. The team’s final three points came from Gilchrist, who scored a field goal and a foul shot. She also had four steals and an assist in the game.

Other leading rebounders for the Lady Raiders were Hinson (four), Madisen Jackson (three) and MaKailah Jackson (two).

Southern Lee (0-6) used four points from Ella Holder. Also scoring were Priyanna Tabon (two points) and Makayla Hall (one point).

Heading into the holiday break, the Lady Raiders (5-3, 2-0 SAC) won’t play again until next Tuesday at home against non-conference Westover High School (5-1).
