Lady Raiders notch perfect record through two jamborees

ROCKINGHAM — If this past week was any indication of how well the upcoming season could go, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ basketball team is bound to bounce back in 2023-24.

The Lady Raiders played in two events last week, hosting a jamboree on Tuesday before traveling to Winston-Salem for a two-day live event.

During that stretch, Richmond played a total of seven games and collected a perfect 7-0 record.

“I thought we played well last week,” head coach Teddy Moseley said. “Jamyia Lindsey is starting to get back to form from a couple years ago. We have added some old but new faces in Rena Drake, who sat out last season, but hasn’t missed a step. She actually has improved from her freshman season. Her basketball IQ is off the charts.

“Jasiah Gilchrist has added a much-needed presence at the guard position to take some of the pressure off Jamyia,” he added of the transfer from Pinecrest. “Her defensive presence has brought a dynamic to our team unlike we’ve ever seen.

“Rising freshman Madisen Jackson will be a huge piece to the puzzle moving forward, and she has proven that she can score as well.”

Moseley noted that Ryelan Lyerly will be returning for her senior season and is scheduled to have surgery later this week. Once healthy, he said Lyerly “gives us another scoring threat.”

Richmond opened its three-game jamboree at home with a 54-15 win over Sandhills Athletic Conference opponent Union Pines High School.

Lindsey, who tore her ACL last summer and is getting back into form, led the team with 13 points. Gilchrist was next up with 11 points.

The Lady Raiders followed with a 50-25 win over Pine Forest High School. Again, Lindsey (15 points) and Gilchrist (11 points) led the team in scoring.

Closing out the Lady Raider Jamboree, Richmond notched a 45-20 victory over Knightdale High School. Three players reached double figures — Lindsey (14 points), Quanna Bostic (11 points) and Gilchrist (10 points).

Participating in the Rise Live Event on Thursday and Friday, the Lady Raiders played two games each day.

With college coaches and scouts in attendance, Richmond cruised past Enka High School 45-20 to start things off. Lindsey netted a team-high 17 points, getting scoring help from Drake and Gilchrist, who each scored 10 points.

Thursday’s final game was a 37-20 victory over Hickory High School. Lindsey (16 points) and Gilchrist (10 points) combined for most of the scoring, while Jackson chipped in eight points.

A 43-19 win started day two for Richmond, which cruised past Garinger High School. Gilchrist nearly outscored the other team by herself, netting a game-high 15 points. Lindsey added 14 points and Drake scored eight points.

The closest game the Lady Raiders played was their finale against East Burke. Thanks to a game-tying triple in the closing seconds from Lindsey (20 points), Richmond won 60-58 in overtime.

Gilchrist had the game-winning bucket in overtime and finished with 10 points. Jackson also reached double digits with 11 points.

“We’re looking forward to another big year from Jamyia,” Moseley said. “She’s going to be special once again. We have a good team, one that we can play at a fast tempo on defense and offense.

“If we can stay healthy, we can make a deep run,” he closed. “Jasiah is a lock-downdefender, can score in transition and creates so many turnovers. We have three solid defenders on the perimeter in Jamyia, Jasiah and Rena.”

The Lady Raiders will close out their summer development schedule this week with team camps at Campbell University on Tuesday and UNC-Charlotte on Friday.
