Lady Raiders place 2nd in final home meet

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School girls track and field team competed in its last home and regular-season meet of the season Thursday.

Hosting Sandhills Athletic Conference opponents Scotland and Union Pines high schools, the Lady Raiders took second place as a team with 50 points.

That score trailed meet winner Union Pines (73.5 points), while edging Scotland by a narrow margin (47.5 points).

Also competing were members of non-conference Father Vincent Capodanno High School (3 points).

The Lady Raiders secured points with five victories (5 points each), five runner-ups (3 points each), two third-place finishes (2 points each) and six fourth-place results (1 point each).

Richmond’s wins came courtesy of four individual events and one relay race.

Emily Gonzalez took first place in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 2:54.18. Anayjah Dumas was also first in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 16.89 seconds.

The Lady Raiders’ other two individual wins came courtesy of Ka’mora Watkins and Ella Parker. Watkins won the long jump (15 feet, 4 inches), while Parker threw to a first-place mark of 32 feet, 4 inches in the shot put.

Registering five points was the 4×200-meter relay team with a time of 1:49.40. Recording season-best results in those events were Dumas, Gonzalez and the 4×200 team.

Second-place points came from a sprinting event, a hurdles race, two relay races and another throwing event.

Jasiah Gilchrist cruised to a runner-up time of 12.59 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Just behind Dumas in the 100-meter hurdles was teammate JaMya Fuller (17.23 seconds).

Shadea Harrison launched the discus to a distance of 78 feet, 9 inches for second place. Richmond’s 4×100 and 4×400-meter relay teams notched three points apiece with times of 50.34 seconds and 6:41, respectively.

Both Gilchrist and Fuller had season-best performances in their respective races.

Nevaeh Pierce (long jump) and Anniston Griggs (discus) combined for four points with one third-place result each.

Pierce landed at 13 feet, 5 inches, while Griggs threw the discus to a mark of 71 feet, 8 inches.

Rounding out the Lady Raiders points were Dumas (long and triple jumps, 13 feet, 3 inches and 28 feet, 8.5 inches) Gonzalez (1600-meter run, 6:37.01), Griggs (shot put, 26 feet, 10 inches), Amariah Gibson (200-meter dash, 27.15 seconds) and Samya Patterson (300-meter hurdles, 56.34 seconds).

The Lady Raiders will compete in the SAC championship meet Friday. It will be held at Pinecrest High School and begin events at 2 p.m.
