CAMERON — Opening its season Thursday, the Richmond Senior High School girls track and field team placed second.
The Lady Raiders competed against Lee County and host Union Pines high schools in the Sandhills Athletic Conference meet and finished with 61 points.
Union Pines narrowly edged Richmond for the win with 73 points and Lee County took third with 29 points.
The Lady Raiders had four first-place finishers, nine second-place results and three competitors take third.
Earning first overall were Kymaria Wall in the 400-meter dash (1:11.50), Jamaya Fuller in the 100-meter hurdles (18.52 seconds), Shadea Harrison in the discus throw (89 feet) and the 4x100-meter relay team (54.53 seconds).
The only event Richmond secured second and third place was the 100-meter dash. Amariah Gibson was second overall (13.72 seconds), while Ka’mora Watkins finished third with a time of 13.77 seconds.
Gibson and Watkins also picked up another second-place finish in the 200-meter dash and high jump, respectively. In the 200-meter sprint, Gibson clocked in at 29.10 seconds and Watkins cleared the bar at 4 feet, 4 inches.
The Lady Raiders picked up points with a pair of second-place times in two distance events. Emily Gonzalez ran the 800-meter race in 3:03.28 and Mariana Mendez completed the 1600-meter run in 6:41.42.
Samya Patterson’s time of 1:09.06 in the 300-meter hurdles was good for second place, while the 4x200-meter relay team placed second with a time of 1:59.77.
Richmond’s other two second-place point earners were Fuller in the long jump (14 feet, 2 inches) and Ella Parker in the shot put (26 feet, 1 inch).
Rounding out her impressive season-opening performance, Watkins had two of the team’s three third-place marks. She took third in the triple jump (30 feet, 4 inches) and the aforementioned 100-meter dash.
Anayjah Dumas also took third place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.15 seconds.
The Lady Raiders will have a home meet Thursday against Hoke County and Southern Lee high schools. Events will start at 5 p.m.
