SPRING HILL — Looking to wrap up a perfect regular season with a win Thursday was the Rockingham Middle School girls’ basketball team. And that’s exactly what the Lady Rockets managed to do.

On the road at Spring Hill Middle School, the only team standing in the way between the Lady Rockets and their perfect season was the Lady Spartan squad. But it wasn’t much of a fight for either team, as Rockingham rolled to a 47-27 victory.

With the win, head coach Teresa Mason’s team improved to a perfect 9-0 on the season, and will head into the Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference playoffs as the No. 1 seed. Taking No. 2 was Hamlet’s girls’ team (7-2), and Ellerbe (5-4) also made the playoffs with the No. 4 seed.

The loss by the Lady Spartans put them at 3-6 on the season, and moved them to the outside looking in for the playoff bracket.

Helping the Lady Rockets to the SEMSAC regular season title was a trio of double-digit scorers. Keyoni Nichols scored a team-high 15 points, with C’Niya Hinson and Jamyia Lindsey chipping in 13 points and 12 points, respectively.

Also helping out Rockingham in the win was Layla Morman, who added six points to the board. Rounding out the scoring for the visiting team was C’Nedra Hinson, who connected on a free throw for one point.

The Lady Rockets will receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs and wait to play the winner of the No. 4 Ellerbe and No. 5 Sandy Grove first-round matchup. A date and time for the second-round game has yet to be announced.

The ROSports team will publish a middle school basketball playoff preview for boys and girls early next week. Of the eight in-county teams, two boys’ and three girls’ teams made the postseason.
