ROCKINGHAM — Playing for the first time in the new year, the Rockingham Middle School girls’ basketball team defeated Anson Middle School on Wednesday.

Defending their home court, the Lady Rockets won by double digits, rolling past the Lady Bearcats 29-14. It was their third straight win to start the season.

The leading scorer for Rockingham was Madisen Jackson, who netted 10 points. Also scoring were teammates Kamora Watkins (9 points), J’nasia Neal (8 points) and Ella Parker (2 points).

The Lady Rockets got off to a quick start with a 12-2 run in the game’s first 15 minutes. Anson countered Rockingham’s stingy defense by dominating the boards and keeping the ball out of the hand of the Lady Rockets.

The Lady Bearcats closed out the half on a 5-0 run to cut Rockingham’s lead to five points at the break.

In the third quarter, the Lady Bearcats still had trouble finding the net, but their keep-away efforts continued to slow down Rockingham’s scoring.

Through the first seven minutes of the third quarter, the Lady Rockets only managed to outscore the Lady Bearcats 4-3. But a putback from Jackson and a free throw from Watkins put the Lady Rockets ahead by 9 points heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, Jackson, Watkins, Neal, and Parker each contributed to a 10-4 run to close out the game.

The Lady Rockets (3-0) host in-county opponent Ellerbe Middle School on Thursday.
