ROCKINGHAM — Senior softball player Madison Jordan has been named the ROSports Official Richmond County Female Athlete of the Week presented by Moss Brothers Tires & Service.

The Richmond Senior High School softball team was impacted by last week’s rain and was only able to squeeze in one of its three scheduled games. Jordan and the Lady Raiders took advantage of the opportunity and routed Uwharrie Charter Academy by 10 runs in a mercy-rule win.

They followed up with another convincing win Monday, taking down Anson High School 15-2. A senior making the transition to a new position this spring, this is Jordan’s first career selection.

“GOING YARD” WITH MADISON JORDAN

A three-year starter for the Lady Raiders, Jordan acknowledged during a preseason interview that she would have to be among those veteran players to step up and make the 2020 season a success. And that’s exactly what she’s done through the first two games of the season.

In last week’s season opener at home against Uwharrie Charter, a 13-3 rout in five innings, Jordan went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, the team’s first home run of the season and a game-high four runs batted in.

Up to bat in the bottom of the third inning, Jordan dug in and slapped an RBI double to left field, scoring teammate Taylor Waitley. It was the third straight double for Richmond and helped put the Lady Raiders up 4-0.

An inning later, a six-run frame for the home team, Jordan delivered again with a three-run blast over the left field wall. Facing an 0-1 count against pitcher Madison Mabe, Jordan turned on a fastball to extend the Lady Raiders’ lead to 10-0.

Jordan kept her bat going in Richmond’s 15-2 win over Anson, collecting an RBI double in the process. Through two games, Jordan is batting .429 with three extra base hits, including a home run, and is tied with junior teammate Payton Chappell for the team-high in RBIs (5).

Richmond will face its first test of the season with a home-and-home series with Purnell Swett High School in the Sandhills Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday and Friday. At home Tuesday, first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
