HAMLET — The Hamlet Middle School football team returned to the field after two weeks off following its bye week, and the rust showed for the Red Rams.
Hosting Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference opponent Anson Middle School, the Red Rams dropped their second straight game after starting the fall with two wins. The Bearcats made quick work against Hamlet, rolling to a 48-12 victory.
Last week, Anson also had a big game against Rockingham Middle School, handing the Rockets a 38-6 loss last week, scoring 32 unanswered points in the second half.
In what head coach John Ware called a “very lopsided game,” Hamlet’s only two sparks on offense came in the kickoff return game. Teammates David McNair and Larease Swinnie both ran back kickoffs for a touchdown.
One thing the Red Rams had trouble with was containing Anson, as Hamlet’s players were visibly outsized by the Bearcats. Two running backs for Anson carried the weight of the game’s offense and scoring, while a solid passing game also hindered Hamlet’s chances to get back into the game.
With both Hamlet scores coming in the first half, the Red Rams’ offense only managed to record one first down in the final two quarters of play. That moving of the chains came courtesy of an Anson penalty.
Now 2-2 on the season, Hamlet will look to return to the win column next Wednesday.
