McRae competes at ‘very tough’ Whispering Pines

WHISPERING PINES — Taking on a full round of golf, sophomore Jacey McRae battled a difficult course on Tuesday.

The lone member of the Richmond Senior High School girls’ golf team participating, McRae competed against other Sandhills Athletic Conference golfers at the Country Club of Whispering Pines.

McRae shot a 142 during the 18-hole match, posting a 70 on the front nine and a 72 on the back nine.

Head coach Keith Parsons said it was a “very tough course at the Country Club of Whispering Pines, which is reflected in the scores.”

McRae’s teammate Ella Munn did not participate in the match due to running with the cross country team at Hinson Lake.

Although the course proved difficult, Parsons expressed his pleasure with McRae’s progress during just her third high school match.

“Another day of learning for Jacey,” Parsons said. “She holed a 5-foot putt on the second hole for bogey and generally continued to show improvement throughout the round.

“Each week, you can see her comfort level increasing, and I believe she feels it enough to continue practicing once our season ends with our final match next week.”

Pinecrest High School won the match with a team score of 232, and was led by Julia Herzburg’s final posting of 75 (+3).

The Lady Raider golf team will close out its regular season with its final match next Monday at Pinehurst No. 6. Both McRae and Munn are expected to participate, with tee times set for 2 p.m.
