ROCKINGHAM — A hopeful new start-up softball league will give local players a chance to enjoy the game in Richmond County.

An organizational meeting for a slow pitch softball league for players 50 years of age and older will be held at East Rockingham Park on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.

Tommy Shelton, one of three organizers, has been a longtime player of the sport.

A member of a travel league in Charlotte, and a familiar face in other leagues, Shelton said the goal of the new program is to give players a chance to compete and have fun locally.

“A lot of us have been playing softball for so long and we wanted to get something going around here in Richmond County,” Shelton said. “Just something to give us and some of the other older players a chance to enjoy the game.”

The meeting will serve as a way to determine interest level, discuss the league’s format and address other organizational needs.

Those interested can contact Shelton at 910-331-4223, Jeff Ingram at 910-995-6912 or Richard Kirk at 910-331-4027.
