Middle school basketball teams wrap up regular-season play

RICHMOND COUNTY — Several of Richmond County’s middle school basketball programs ended their respective regular seasons with a win on Thursday.

Lady Red Rams defeat Ellerbe behind Drake, Lyerly

The Hamlet Middle School girls’ basketball team, coached by Mitch Coe, capped its season with a 62-6 win over Ellerbe Middle School at home.

Orena Drake led the Lady Red Rams with 17 points (10 in the second half), while teammate Ryelan Lyerly dropped 15 points (nine in the first half). 

Netting eight points each were Saquanna Bostic and Elise Dimery. For the Lady Wildcats, Taniya Chandler scored four points and Symone Terry added a bucket.

Hamlet’s girls finished the season 7-2, while Ellerbe closed out the year with a 1-8 record.

Red Rams use three double-digit scorers to rout Wildcats

In boys’ action, head coach Keith Parsons and the Red Rams defeated Ellerbe 81-29 to cap a 6-3 season. 

Jordan Bostick put up 13 points for the Red Rams, followed by 12 points each from David McNair and Tristan Wall. Other top scorers were Toby McInnis (8), JV Drake (7), Jacoby Martin (7) and Amer Morrison (5).

Hamlet shot 32-for-92 from the floor (34.7 percent) and 12-for-37 (32.4 percent) from three-point land.

Leading Ellerbe was Dalan Utley with 12 points. Conner Utley chipped in eight points and Freddy Hill added two three-pointers. Ellerbe finished 1-8 on the season.

Lady Rockets cap perfect regular season, earn top spot

Playing at home, head coach Teresa Mason and the Rockingham Middle School girls’ basketball team improved to 9-0 with a 45-17 win over Spring Hill Middle School.

Making it the second straight perfect season for the Lady Rockets, the team was led by 13 points from Jamyia Lindsey and 10 more from Keyoni Nichols. The duo combined for 23 first-half points.

Other players to score were Jasmine Jennings (6), while C’Niya Hinson, J’Nasia Neal and Allie Rodgers each contributed four points. The Lady Rockets earned the regular season title and will prepare to make a run at their eighth conference championship in the last nine years.

Rockets cruise past Spring Hill for eighth win

After the Lady Rockets’ win, the Rockets and head coach Julius Bowden had an easy time against the Spartans, rolling to a 66-39 win.

Paul McNeil paced the team with 21 points, his third straight game with at least 20 points on the board. He scored 11 points in the first quarter, and added four more before the half.

Jaziah Liles hit double digits with 13 points, Talan Stoner landed three triples and tallied 11 points, while Jada Zimmerman netted all 10 of his points in the first half.

The Rockets ended their season 8-1, a game behind West Hoke Middle School for second place.

Both Hamlet and Rockingham teams will now wait for playoff seeding to be released late this week. ROSports will release the full brackets, schedule and times when they are available.

Note: No scores were reported for either Cordova Middle School team.
