Middle School Sports Report: Cordova, Rockingham football fall in Week 4

RICHMOND COUNTY – Week four of the Richmond County middle school football season is in the books, as both Cordova and Rockingham middle schools fell in their respective contests this week.

Cavaliers edged by Anson due to late turnovers

WADESBORO – In what was a tight game throughout, the Cordova football team was outlasted by Anson Middle School on Wednesday by a final score of 26-14. This moves Cordova to 2-2, 1-2 SEMSAC on the season and sets up an important run for Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference rival Rockingham, as upcoming games with Hamlet and Anson will decide the champion of the West Division.

Anson scored on a long run down the left sideline just one play after the Cavs threw an interception on their opening drive.  The two-point conversion run failed, giving Anson a slight 6-0 advantage.

Cordova was able to sustain a good drive leading into halftime sparked by a big kickoff return from Dillon Locklear.  On third down, quarterback Emoni McBride hooked up with Frazion Steele for a 30-yard touchdown reception. Like the Bearcats earlier in the half,  the two-point run was stopped, and the game went into halftime knotted 6-6.

Anson returned the opening kickoff of the second half back for a touchdown, again failing on its two-point try, regaining the lead 12-6. On the ensuing Cordova possession, the Cavs drove right down the field and scored on a nine-yard scoot by Tykeem Ellerbe.  Isaiah Wall caught the two-point conversion from McBride, and Cordova led 14-12 midway through the third quarter.

After that, it was all Bearcats. Anson took six minutes off the clock with a long touchdown drive, and went up 18-14 with four minutes to go in the game.  Cordova got two more possessions in that span, but the turnover bug hit as a fumble and another interception sealed the win for the Bearcats.

Anson scored on a late run, and the final score was 26-14. McBride had a nice day for Cordova, throwing for a touchdown and a two-point conversion, as well as collecting an interception from his cornerback position.

Cordova is off next week, and will wrap up its season with a visit from Sandy Grove on Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Carver Eagles soar past Rockets

LAURINBURG – The Rockingham Rockets fell to Carver Middle School by a final score of 36-6 on Wednesday, dropping the Rockets’ to 2-2 on the season.

Head coach Phillip Waddell’s team was coming off a tough win over Cordova the week before, but failed to get much going against the Eagles. The only bright spot for the visiting Rockets was Emerson Wall’s 120 rushing yards on eight attempts and one touchdown. Jaden Jenks finished the afternoon with five tackles to lead the team.
